No Iron Benefit from Eating Placenta | Maternity Today

Ingestion the placenta, its practice by some who believe there are health benefits for mothers, but a new study found no such benefit.  Ingestion of the placenta believing that it has health benefits has been a growing practice in industrialized countries throughout Europe, Australia and U.S. Dried human placenta is also used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat wasting diseases, infertility, impotence, and other conditions.

Enthusiasts believe it may protect against postpartum depression, reduces post-delivery pain, boosts energy, helps with lactation, promotes skin elasticity, enhances maternal bonding, or replenishes iron in the body. However, the new scientific research published online on Nov. 3, 2016 in “The Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health” provides no evidence that consuming the placenta prevents or treats against iron deficiency.
